MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
In 1990, I initiated an NGO named Pridneprovie Ecological Foundation which later spun off Pridneprovie Cleaner Production Center (PCPC) and Pridneprovie Ecological Association. I currently carry out general management of the three organizations. These NGOs aim at making organizational infrastructures enabling technology transfer, market approaches, and nonalarmist techniques in environmental protection in Ukraine. I founded a R&D laboratory for reactors and mass transfer apparatuses under the Ministry of Chemical Industry of the USSR and managed it from 1975 to 1989. Its staff varied from 50 to 120 persons while its estimated annual budget sometimes reached an estimated ,000. The laboratory pioneered flexible synthesis in fine chemistry in the USSR. I developed a national program for this R&D area and was a member of the national ad hoc council. For the independent Ukraine, I have managed drafting of national projects for Human Adaptation and Rehabilitation under Anthropogenic Loads, Human Ecology, Sustainable Development Concept for Ukraine, Cleaner Production Concept for Ukraine, and a program of Regional Environmental Management to ISO 14000. I am President of Pridneprovie Cleaner Production Center having a bank of industrial ecology projects. Recently, PCPC has launched Constructive Ecology and Business Journal, a nation-wide monthly. I am its editor-in-chief. The journal addresses environmental challenges in industry and agriculture using
market-oriented approaches. It is intended to be constructive, i.e. to demonstrate feasibility of environmental solutions. Special attention is given to transfer of international experience in applying market mechanisms to environmental management (ISO14000, waste management, industrial symbiosis, pollution prevention, cleaner production, life cycle assessment etc.)
Being a supporter of public participation, I am on Environmental Board of Dnepropetrovsk Municipal Council and also chair Municipal Commission of Environmental Experts and Regional Commission for Environmental Education Methodology. I co-chaired NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Conversion and Environment held in Dnepropetrovsk in 1997 and organized and chaired 5 other international events on environmental issues and 3 national scientific conferences on Upgrading Chemical Processes and Apparatuses.
Among other events I (co-)organized are cultural festivals, trade shows and exhibitions. I have directed and hosted TV/radio programs on current developments in economy and social and cultural life. Furthermore, my NGOs are running an inter-university course on environmental management and
several programs of continuing environmental education, a school of environmental management, sustainable development, cleaner production and pollution prevention for businesses etc. Eco-Anima, a children's art studio, has also been founded.
